Among the many nutrients necessary for maintaining healthy vision, iron plays an essential role that often goes unnoticed. Iron is a key mineral in the production of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body, including the eye tissues. An iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a condition that reduces oxygen supply to the eyes, causing eye strain, difficulty concentrating, and, in severe cases, visual impairment.

There are two main types of iron in food: heme iron, found in animal products such as red meat, fish, and poultry; and non-heme iron, found in plant sources such as legumes, green leafy vegetables, and nuts. Heme iron is more efficiently absorbed by the body, while non-heme iron has more limited absorption, influenced by other dietary components. Combining foods rich in non-heme iron with sources of vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and peppers, can significantly improve its absorption.

People at increased risk for iron deficiency, such as women of reproductive age, pregnant women, children, and those following a vegetarian or vegan diet, should pay special attention to their iron intake. In the ocular area, iron deficiency can contribute to conjunctival pallor, eye strain, and, in long-term cases, damage to the retina or optic nerve due to insufficient oxygen supply.

Therefore, maintaining a balanced diet that includes sufficient sources of iron is essential to preserve visual function and prevent ophthalmological complications. Regular blood tests and consulting a healthcare professional if you experience symptoms of unexplained fatigue, paleness, or visual disturbances are key to timely intervention.

Remembering the importance of a varied and iron-rich diet can be a protective factor for both general health and eye well-being, promoting optimal vision throughout life.
